Devoted: Lucas Beauforts Homage to Skateboard Print Media

September 28, 2017

Lucas Beaufort, is the 35-year-old French artist who has become known for doodling his multicolored characters on iconic and popular skate photos and advertisements. He's possessed by skate culture and is equally enthralled by it's convergence with print media.

"I’ve always been a huge fan of print magazines, I've collected every single piece since I was able to read," says Beaufort. Skateboard magazines were the only way to get news from the world, it meant so much to me before the Internet."

In an attempt to pay tribute to people that have spent their lives documenting skateboarding, everyone from writers, photographers, skaters, and brands, Beaufort created "Devoted," a documentary tracing the overwhelming influence of skateboard media on the culture and where some of its biggest player envision the future of print. The hour-long doc is ofcused on three key periods, 90's to 2000, 2000-2016, and the next ten years. It also features a heavy-hitting cast of notable names including Giovanni Reda, Marc Johnson, Tony Vitello, Steve Berra, Chad Muska, Keith Hufnagel, Michael Burnett, Eric Swisher, Mark Whiteley, Brad Staba, Guy Mariano and so many more.

In 1997, Spiritualized's album Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space was named album of the year by NME magazine over much more glorified opus albums like Radiohead's OK Computer and The Verve's Urban Hymns. The newest release from Jason Pierce & Co., And Nothing Hurt, is a similarly ambitious blend of shoegazer rock and indie R&B that is sure to keep his legion of fans happy, but let's hope that with lyrics like "Gonna burn brightly for a while/and then you're gone," it's not the last.
On their 6th album, veteran indie rock brooders Interpol team up with producer Dave Fridmann for their latest offering, Marauder. As always their songs are anchored by the moody tenor of dapper lead singer and sometime surfer Paul Banks. The only thing missing from previous releases are the strong bass lines of long time collaborator Carlos Dengler. Standout tracks are "The Rover" and "Stay in Touch."
