Admiral Radley debuted their first album this week, but the band is far from inexperienced. The four person group is a merger of members from two California bands, Grandaddy and Earlimart. The group is fronted by Jason Lytle of Grandaddy and the group has fittingly titled their debut Admiral Radley album: I Heart California. Besides the fact that each member is from California, it doesn't take very long of listening to the album to absorb the Cali-love.
The first song is also titled "I Heart California" and quickly introduces the feel-good, laid-back tempo that feels familiar to other West Coast summery jams. Unfortunately, the album never quite comes together as successfully (nor as upbeat) as it does on the opening, album-titled track, but the album is nonetheless pretty decent.
This isn't summertime music in the sense of bursting with energy that makes you want to rush out to the beach, but includes more so a down-tempo summer style that seems more fitting to a slow motion montage of summer activities, or maybe just more fitting on those days where the heat is crippling enough to suspend you to no more than sitting in the shade outside. At times Admiral Radley's album branches out into a quirky semi-experimental sound, succeeding on "Sunburn Kids" but falling short and just feeling disjointed on "I'm All F****d On Beer" (even though this song had such a promising title!). The album also dips into a more serious tone at times, with "Lonesome Co." on the first half of the album as well as later in the album with the two song stretch of "Ending of Me" and "GNDN"; of these songs I enjoyed "Ending of Me" the most (although this one is also the most upbeat of the 3, so you can see where my bias lies).
Overall, I Heart California is a promising and quirky debut release from Admiral Radley, but I feel that it's style is too inconsistent and some songs have an incomplete feel to them, to give this a high recommendation. That being said, it's worth a listen and if nothing else, opening track "I Heart California" is strong enough to be fit as many peoples' summer anthem.
