Michael Benjamin Lerner plays drums, guitar and sings vocals to make up the Seattle indie rock band Telekinesis (although he does have a small crew that plays live shows with him). He only has one album out at the moment, titled Telekinesis!, and hasn't released anything since a 3 song 7" vinyl released this Spring, but I think his talent is much too unknown and underrated to remain as far under the radar as it has.
Telekinesis makes simple songs, but the music is very easy to listen to and has an irresistible pop charm that seems very true to what has become classic Seattle indie rock/pop. The style seems most refreshing when compared to how much the rest of the alternative music field is so experimental lately; Telekinesis isn't adventurous but rather creates an engaging body of music which feels familiar while still feeling fresh. The Telekinesis! album was mixed and recorded within only a two week period and apart from Lerner on all the instruments, the album was produced by the masterful Chris Walla. The album was released in 2009, but so far this year Telekinesis has released a 3 song EP titled "Dirty Thing" which is good but doesn't feel quite as effective as the 2009 album (although that's tough competition because Telekinesis! is one of my top albums from all of 2009).
As stated above, Lerner does perform with a band for the Telekinesis live shows. They played at Sasquatch! Music Festival this year but unfortunately I had to miss their performance, but I've heard Telekinesis is also great live.
Telekinesis hasn't dropped anything new recently, but Michael Lerner is an extremely promising one man band that I know would grow to be very popular with the proper exposure. So listen to the songs below, buy/download the Telekinesis! album and then go impress your mainstream friends with your excellent taste.
