The Scissor Sisters are a modern glam-rock group from New York City that has seen huge success nearly everywhere except for at home in the United States, where they've only been met with modest success. This week they released their third album, Night Work, and sounding like something straight out of dance club, it's definitely their most electronic album to date.
The Scissor Sisters have been labeled by some as a "gay band" because of their flamboyant music and style, but lead singer Jake Shears dismisses those comments with stating "The fact that some of us are gay affects our music the same amount as
it does that some of the members of Blondie are straight". The band members clearly were impervious to any insult, as Night Work is their flashiest music to date.
Fans of the Scissor Sister's last two albums might be a little disappointed with the shift moving further away from the '70s glam rock influences and more towards a synth pop sound that seems rooted more so in the '80s. Night Work realistically is my least favorite Scissor Sisters record to date, but I don't think it's exactly fair to compare this album directly to their last two. I like Night Work pretty well, but it just delivers on a different level than the last two. The Scissor Sisters of the past was more light-hearted and fun, and much of Night Work sounds like a darker, more intense dance anthem. One of my two most favorite songs from the album, "Something Like This", might be the most "un-Scissor Sisters like" song of them all, but I find it strangely awesome (to me it sounds like robot dance music). The song "Whole New Way" still carries a good amount of the old Scissor Sisters vibe and lands in as my other favorite song on the album. Listen to both of these songs right below.
The Scissor Sister's Night Work is in stores now and available on iTunes/Amazon/Zune.
The more traditional Scissor Sisters sounding: "Whole New Way"
And the more experimental sounding: "Something Like This"
