Five-piece American rock band Rooney has hovered in the realm of being not quite mainstream --but still bigger than most indie bands-- for just about their whole career as a band. Rooney's sound is distinct among modern music for incorporating different styles from past generations such as the Beach Boys, music from the British Rock Invasion, and '80s pop. Rooney has just released their third studio album, Eureka, and in my opinion it fits in just like their previous work: solid and consistent, but nothing too stand out.
At the least, Rooney knows how to time their release; putting out their CD at the start of summer is a great decision because the summertime is where Rooney's music feels most at home. Rooney's fame was first bumped up by an appearance on the hit TV show The O.C., and the associations to summertime in California have remained a core element to the sound of their music ever since. If you aren't familiar with Rooney's music yet, you should easily get sucked into how simply likable their music is and quickly have fun with it. If you do already know their music, then you should be pleased to discover that they haven't strayed too much away from their sound, but your attention might not be held as long this time around because they haven't brought any drastically impressive new elements to their sound. The biggest difference with Eureka seems to be that they cut back on the '80s-influence that was most popular on their second album, Calling the World.
Rooney is headed by Robert Schwartzman, brother of actor/musician Jason Schwartzman who was a former member of the band Phantom Planet and now makes up the solo-project Coconut Records.
Here's two songs off of Rooney's new album Eureka which is currently available on iTunes/Amazon/Zune and in stores:
