Mr. Hudson is a British electro pop artist who released his second album, Straight No Chaser, last fall in the U.K., but oddly it only just hit the U.S. market last week. This is his first release by himself as "Mr. Hudson", the first was with a band as Mr. Hudson & the Library which released in 2007. Since that debut release, Mr. Hudson dropped the band but added some new friends by signing to Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music label.
While Mr. Hudson yet isn't a household name, he has made contributions to some big time U.S. hits in the last few years. He is featured on Kanye West's experimental album 808s & Heartbreak, as a singer on "Paranoid", a producer for "Street Lights" and also appears in some background vocals on other songs from the album. Additionally, Mr. Hudson is featured on the Jay-Z song "Young Forever" from The Blueprint 3. With appearances on all of these hits songs, it is clear that Mr. Hudson can transcend his niche market into mainstream acceptance, but his solo work is still yet to take off. Most surprising, is that Straight No Chaser presented a strong single in "Supernova" which featured a more Coldplay-like sound from Mr. Hudson and the song also featured Kanye West. As soon as I first heard "Supernova" I thought it would easily blow up and become as big as a Kanye West single... but somehow the song only ever peaked it at the 112 spot on the Billboard charts in the U.S. The rest of the album isn't as uptempo or Top 40-like as "Supernova", but a pleasant listen nonetheless if you enjoy British pop music. It reminds me of a mix between the more robot-electronic Dan Black mixed with stronger more dramatic vocals that resemble Chris Martin of Coldplay a bit more.
So now to for us Americans the G.O.O.D. Music debut by Mr. Hudson is available for purchase, although I'd imagine that most of the U.S. fans that were anticipating the release of Straight No Chaser (myself included) probably snagged the album when it released overseas last October.
Here's a couple Mr. Hudson songs from Straight No Chaser:
