RickoLus is a small time folk artist signed to also small time Portland, OR based indie label: Circle Into Square Records. RickoLus is just a moniker for the band's only member, Richard J. Colado. Despite having been making music for more than a decade, RickoLus just released his debut album for Circle Into Square, entitled Youngster, on July 27th.
The album feels like true grass roots indie, but the songs feel like honest emotional reflections from singer Richard Colado. In an age where "indie" is hardly underground sees continually increasing exposure, RickoLus somehow reminds me of how indie is supposed to feel. The songs aren't too flashy nor enhanced with a big name producer (it was all done by Colado himself), but RickoLus still keeps from ever sounding repetitive with pulling in more than just guitars and drums, songs like "Cemetary [sic]" and "Moving On" are driven by a piano and an accordion, respectively. Yes, RickoLus's one member, Colado, write all the songs and plays all of the instruments which include guitar, drums, piano, accordion, bell kit, and synthesizers. RickoLus is pretty deep down in the blogosphere's pool of indie notoriety, but his multi-talents should push him higher to the surface if he keeps making music. His folk style isn't for everyone, but songs like "Photographs" and "We Never Had Much" both possess catchy rhythms that I imagine can be enjoyed by any indie rock fans.
Here's the music video for "Photographs" and read below the video for where to get the album at.
RickoLus's Youngster is available for purchase on iTunes & Amazon, but I recommend getting it straight from Circle Into Square's own website (here), where the digital download is not only cheaper at only $7, but also includes 4 bonus tracks only available at the label's website (including one of my favorite songs from the album: "Well In The Ceiling").
