The Hip Hop artist Drake, know first for playing Jimmy Brooks on the TV series Degrassi: The Next Generation, has found charting success on Billboard. Reading his biography might give many long time genre fans a need to read through it twice. Not only is a rapper crossing up from a childhood TV series, but he is from Toronto, Canada. It is not a comment on his ability, rather focus on where the genre has come to.
Traditional fans are used to rappers being from urbanized areas of the United States. Many artist over the years even had to prove how gangster they were just to get air time. It has been a long time since Hip Hop and Rap have been underground movements, but Drake represents how global the genre has become. Hip Hop artist have been showing up in places like England, main land Europe, and Asia, but without mainstream wide American appeal.
There was a time when even, top charting, Eminem was seen as soft just because he was white, and from the border of the Detroit city limit. Drake’s biography would be more similar to a bubble gum pop star rather than a Hip Hop/Rap artist. Drake, though, is a positive step forward in the evolution of the genre. With his success, he is proving once again that Hip Hop (and music) is free of boundary lines of all kinds. His latest album Thank Me Later, has peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Hip Hop chart. Pretty impressive with an independent label.
His single, “Find Your Love” from his latest album shows his and the genre’s ability to take in multiple influences and further progress in the development of the industry. Drake has been in the game since 2006, but it is looking like he will be a major player in the near future. Hip Hop is here to stay, and now it is up to the innovators to mold a new reality.
