Hey Champ Set to Tear Up the Dance Floor

After almost two years since the release of their defining hit song, Chicago newcomers Hey Champ are just about ready to bring a full album of heart-pumping disco beats into your home, with the release of their debut album, Star, set to be released on July 13.


Hey Champ caught the eye of fellow Chicago musician, Lupe Fiasco, in 2008 with the video for their song "Cold Dust Girl" (see video below) and Fiasco soon signed the group to his label, 1st and 15th Entertainment, and Hey Champ went on a full tour as the opening act for Lupe. However, in Fall of 2009 Lupe decided he needed to focus on his individual career, and so the few artists of 1st & 15th were in need of a new home. Hey Champ couldn't be held down for long, and is now signed to Townie Records with their first album due out this summer. Hey Champ also performed at SXSW festival in Austin, Texas last month.

Hey Champ only has a few songs out right now, but let me just say that their song "Cold Dust Girl" is an absolute banger. It was in my top couple songs of all of 2009, and even more startling is that regardless of how many times I have listened to the song, for some reason I still love it and it has never felt "overplayed" to me. The song is pretty simple, but every bit of it is extremely catchy and enticing; they also have a music video that looks very well done and artistic, and its modest effects and style come off as a refreshing change from the big budget MTV videos.
